The Compare Files command lets you see the differences, cell by cell, between two workbooks.

The results are returned in a window in which you can see the differences side by side. Click Home > Copy Results to Clipboard to copy and paste the results to another program.

In Windows 7, click the Windows Start button and then > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2013 > Office 2013 Tools > Spreadsheet Compare 2013. Use the Workbook Relationship Diagram to create an interactive, graphical map of workbook dependencies created by connections (links) between files. You need to have two workbooks open in Excel to run this command.

If you work with scripts, Excel Compare can also be spawned from the command line. Excel Compare is perfect for analyzing the changes in data over time and can find new, changed and delete data.

Differences are highlighted with a cell fill color or text font color, depending on the type of difference. The Inquire tab on the Excel ribbon has buttons for the commands described below.

In the Compare Files dialog box, in the Compare row, browse to the earlier version of your workbook. To show cell formatting from the workbook, click Home > Show Workbook Colors. It can compare between different ranges of multiple spreadsheets and can even present the report as a new Excel spreadsheet.
